Required immunizations

Required Immunizations

By state law, all children must have the required vaccines before or at the start of the school year. If proof is not received within 14 days of the beginning of the school year, the child will not be permitted to stay in school until proof is received.

Prior to kindergarten, all children must have:

  • 5 doses – DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis); or
  • 4 doses – DTaP, if at least one was on or after the 4th birthday
  • 4 doses – Polio; or
  • 3 doses – Polio, if at least one was on or after the 4th birthday
  • 2 doses – MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • 3 doses– Hepatitis B
  • 2 doses– Varicella (Chickenpox)

Prior to 7th grade, all children must have:

  • 1 dose - Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis)
  • 1 dose Meningococcal vaccine

Prior to 12th grade, all children must have:

  • 1 dose Meningococcal vaccine

To avoid the possibility of having any child excluded from school, Marion Public Health urges all parents to plan now to get their child immunized.

Children who are at least 4 years old can receive their kindergarten vaccines. Children who are 11 years old may receive the Tdap vaccine.

Marion Public Health, now located at 181 S. Main St., is currently accepting appointments for school immunizations. All Medicaid insurance plans are accepted, as well as many private insurance plans. No child will be denied required vaccines due to the inability to pay*.

Meningococcal Immunization Requirements

With the start of the 2016-2017 school year, Ohio will be faced with new meningococcal vaccine requirements for students entering 7th and 12th grades.

Students entering 7th grade will need to have one dose of meningococcal (serogroups A, C, W and Y) vaccine in addition to the current requirement of having one dose of the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine.

Students entering the 12th grade will need to have a second dose of meningococcal vaccine. The second dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required.
