School Absences

Reporting Absences

Amended Substitute Bill 321 "The Missing Child Act" states: "The board of education of each school district shall adopt a written policy with respect to the notification of a student's parents, custodial parent, guardian, legal custodian or other person responsible for him when the student is absent from school."

  1. Parents/guardians are required to notify the school on the day that a student is absent from school.
  2. For those students whose parents do not report the absence of a student, a person is designated to notify the parent/guardian of the absence.
  3. The notification will be by telephone on the day of the absence.
  4. Parents/guardians will provide current home, work, and emergency telephone numbers to the school.
  5. Students should bring a written excuse from parents or guardians the day after an absence and submit the note to the assistant principal's office before reporting to homeroom.
  6. Forgery of any excuse may result in disciplinary action.
Excused Absences

Excused absences are the following and full make-up work will be permitted in the event of:

  • Personal illness
  • Illness in the family requiring the student to be at home
  • Death in the family
  • Funeral and court appearances are remitted absences
  • A medical excuse is a written excuse signed by a doctor with the date of absence noted. This will always be considered as a remitted absence. When there is a question of the doctor's excuse, further verification may be necessary.

Excuses must be returned to the school within 10 school days. Forgery of a medical excuse may result in suspension and possible revocation of prior excuses.

Vacation Days

Four vacation days are permitted per year. The following must be done PRIOR to taking the vacation.

  1. The student must fill out vacation form.
  2. Take the form around to teachers for signature.
  3. Have the vacation day pre-approved by principal.

Vacations during the school year are discouraged.
